King Norodom signs the drafts establishing a French protectorate that will last until 1953.

First expressions of Cambodian Independence
The Frenchwoman Suzanne Karpeles establishes the Buddhist institute of Cambodia and Laos, which seeded the first expressions of a movement of Cambodian independence and basic for Son Ngoc Thanh. Ho Chi Minh founded the Indochinese Communist Party, radiating over Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

King Norodom Sihanouk
After the death of his grandfather King Monivong in 1941, Norodom Sihanouk installed as King by  the French.   Cambodia is  a French protectorate. France chose Norodom over Sisowath Sirik Matak of the House of Sisowath as the French believed he was more manageable.

The Japanese enter Phnom Penh. Sihanouk is crowned king by the Vichy regime.

Son Ngoc Thanh organizes the first anti-Christian demonstrations in Phnom Penh to support the Buddhist nationalists. In Bangkok, Cambodians have established Issarak (Freedom) committees to fight the French.
