Lon Nol overthroughs Sihanouk establishes Khmer Republic
March 18: Sihanouk is overthrown by Defense Minister Lon Nol, Sirik Matak and Cheng Heng. March 23: Sihanouk announces the unitary national front of Kampuchea (F.U.N.K), which includes the Khmer Rouge.

1970 - Prime Minister Lon Nol overthrows Sihanouk in coup. He proclaims the Khmer Republic and sends the army to fight the North Vietnamese in Cambodia. Sihanouk - in exile in China - forms a guerrilla movement. Over next few years the Cambodian army loses territory against the North Vietnamese and communist Khmer Rouge guerrillas

The North Vietnamese army continues to fight the forces of Lon Nol while the Khmer Rouge forge their army. In December, Phnom Penh forces launched Operation Chenla II and were beaten by the North Vietnamese.

Paris Pease Accords of 1973 signed
January 27: signing the majority of the fighting in Cambodia while the Communists Vietnamese are replicated in the frontier zones. The United States is re-bombing Cambodia again. The Khmer Rouge ordered the creation of cooperatives in all their zones . The American congress imposes the cessation of the bombardments on 15th of August.​
