Minnesota Legacy Fund Established
The Minnesota Legacy Fund, officially known as the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, was established in 2008. It was approved by Minnesota voters on November 4, 2008, and the funding began on July 1, 2009, with a three-eighths of one percent sales tax increase dedicated to four funds: Outdoor Heritage, Clean Water, Parks and Trails, and Arts and Cultural Heritage. This amendment will continue until 2034.
The intended mission of the fund:
The original mission of the Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment, passed by Minnesota voters on November 4, 2008, is to protect and enhance key elements of the state by dedicating funding to four specific areas. It amends the Minnesota Constitution to increase the sales and use tax by three-eighths of one percent for 25 years (from July 1, 2009, to 2034), with the revenue distributed into four funds:
1. **Clean Water Fund (33%)**: To protect, enhance, and restore water quality in lakes, rivers, and streams, and to protect groundwater and drinking water sources.
2. **Outdoor Heritage Fund (33%)**: To restore, protect, and enhance wetlands, prairies, forests, and habitats for fish, game, and wildlife.
3. **Parks and Trails Fund (14.25%)**: To support parks and trails of regional or statewide significance.
